Production Description

Known as muffler clamps, these U-bolts have a rounded mounting plate that fully surrounds pipe, conduit, and tubing for a secure fit. Stronger than routing clamps and hangers, U-bolts support heavy pipe, tube, and conduit from ceilings, walls, and poles.

Zinc-plated steel U-bolts have good corrosion resistance in most environments. Chrome-plated steel U-bolts are more corrosion resistant than zinc-plated steel U-bolts. 304 stainless steel U-bolts have excellent corrosion resistance and good chemical resistance.

 Usage 

U-bolts have primarily been used to support pipework, pipes through which fluids and gasses pass. As such, U-bolts were measured using pipe-work engineering speak. A U-bolt would be described by the size of pipe it was supporting. U-bolts are also used to hold ropes together.
The nominal bore of a pipe is actually a measurement of the inside diameter of the pipe. Engineers are interested in this because they design a pipe by the amount of fluid / gas it can transport.

As U-bolts are now being used by a much wider audience to clamp any kind of tubing / round bar, then a more convenient measurement system needs to be used.

U-bolt clamps do work, but they are not really reusable, and they crush the pipe, so it is really had to take them apart for service. Not to mention the nuts tend to rust, locking them together forever.
